Image upscale project

Hi guys!

Having a 24'' screen presents a problem: Older Pix which have 1024x768 px resolution or less don't even fill the screen in terms of height.

So what I'm trying to achieve is a high-quality blowup of lowres pictures, employing specialized plugins rather than the standard bicubic resampling.

Mind you, don't be expecting miracles, as the initial image quality is mediocre at best, and de-blocking, de-noising and recompression all cost precious information.

But still, I think it's a worthwhile (should I say: wankwhile ) thing to try, so here goes the first batch:

have you looked into "resysthisiser " and "Gmic"
for Gimp
also there are some matlab programs for image synthesis
mostly i just remove the jpg artifacts

And, as for the processing: I use Genuine Fractals on the originals first, saving to TIFF to prevent data loss from compression, then Alien Skin Image Doc - deblocking + Noise Ninja + some sharpening; Jpeg compression at 80% quality (90% gave 1meg files, which I didn't want)...

Interesting. These subjects do quite well with up-rezzing.

One thing you might think about-- hold edges in a separate layer for separate processing. A sharp edge will go a long way to trick the eye that there's more resolution than you think . . . all depends on how much hand tweaking you want to do, but creating some edge curves with vector tools can really make an up-rezzed image "pop"

Edges don't do well with stuff like fractals or de-noising, though

there's no hand tweaking, of course; with 100s of images to be processed, that would take much more time than anyone can spare (except digital FX people and film restaurators maybe )...

this is done with one-time optimized (based on initial resolution) batch processes...

sharpening is done with high pass filtering on a separate layer, then blended at 25% opacity
