I've captured a bunch of video files over the years from favorite movie scenes, and am now having trouble viewing them.

Originally I captured them on a desktop computer (ati-all-in-wonder-pro), and then converted them to a non-proprietary avi format to view on other computers. ...ditched the desktop and switched to laptop. At first the laptop would view them just fine, but for some reason I can't fathom, now they no longer open. Now I've switched to a new laptop running Windows 7, and am still unable to view them. I can only assume it's a codec problem. Would somebody please examine the linked video and let me know if they can figure out what programs/codecs I need to have installed?

I assure you the video has worked before... video and audio.

Neither WM-Player or VLC could play it but VLC reported it was missing support for IV41. IV = Indeo Video.

If you google it you will find suitable download places aswell as an explanation why you are not able to view the clip as it is.
Not able to supply a direct downloadlink since it will be on another forum.

I found an old codec on my hdd, it's Intel Indeo 5, but should also play older versions:

Or you can use one of the codec-packs from here

I always let GSpot examine the video files and i saw another thing: your audio track is using the PCM-format, which means it is not compressed in any way. Of course you can play it anywhere, but i makes the files much bigger. So if you encounter some diskspace problems, maybe think of compressing the audio (with VirtualDub using mp3-compressor)

You guys are AMAZING!!!

Both spot on!

Now that I'm fully switched over to a newer computer, do you have any recomendations for a format I should convert all my files to for future compatability? I'm pretty much a neophyte here, and if I should read into one of the earlier posts, just slap me on my wrist and I'll try if you can direct me...

However, I'd really dig a direct answer.

You can't foresee the future what will last for ever but for now DivX compatible avi is common.
When you check the codec it will say ffdshow Audio and ffdshow Video.
I downloaded and tryed to install the iv5 from Loui but during the installation it told me that I already had a newer version of the iv41_32.ax codec. I aborted it and opened my converter AVS Video Converter 6.2.3.314 Loaded your file and it told me the data to the left, shown in the attached image.
The data to the right is the settings I used for the conversion.
Here is the resulting file: File removed from RS.
Original was 16.4MB this one is 3.03MB. For 9 sec it was pretty large and I still think it's a little to large. Around 18MB for 1 minute. I reccon a filesize between 12-15MB for 1 minute is normal.
I have no idea if it has the same quality as the original but I think it is good enough.
Here is the program I used for the conversion dead link
The r4in_4_you part of the filename is the pass.

EDIT: I tweaked the settings a little and got a 2.25MB file dead link
That I reccon as a normal sized file for a playtime of 9 sec.
Data shown in image Converter settings1.JPG
