threads that wedge

There are couple of threads that wedge/jam/stick when you try to get at the last page. If you don't know which threads then you dont need to read this bit. Sometimes you'll get a timeout error, sometimes you'll get a gateway error, sometimes if you wait a month of sundays you will actually get to the page.

I have discovered a way around this problem :-

go to the first, penultimate or any page in between
click Post Reply
now you can scroll the last page in the Topic Review
read whats there
download what you want
click any pictures you want to look at
press backspace
get on with the rest of your life

url construction

some posters require leechers to to construct a url to do a download, eg. they'll have

Code:
hxxp://rapidshare.com/files/123**678/BessieBloggs_AtTheBeach.rar
replace ** with 45

I've tried doing the construction in the url bar, in a sticky note, in a sidebar note, etc.

But what I've found best is to click Quote and use the facilities of the message editor to construct the url - then click Preview and click the link you just constructed. The advantage is that you have all the info available, you can easily cut & paste, move stuff around etc

To deal with those pesky bits of virtual paper some posters use, I drag/drop the image onto an Irfanview (IV) shortcut - press Win/Ctrl/T to make the IV window stay on top, then construct the url as above.

The Win/Ctrl/T comes courtesy of Actual Title Buttons (ATB) - it adds various extra buttons to the title bar - including minimise to tray, roll up/down, stay on top, send to bottom ... - warning its not free, but it works on Win 98->Win7. I find it essential, along with Wizmouse which is free.

Some of what's in ATB and all of what's in Wizmouse were in the original Star system at Parc Xerox, but Gates, Jobs and Woz neglected to pilfer those bits.

This way is quite good if you have not too much posts to check, but if you want go back more than ten posts, you can use this way:

Another way to display quietly these threads is to add the address of the thread's first page in your navigator's favs. Then, when you want to check updates, open it, go down the page, choose "newest first" in the "display options" (as shown in the pic above) and "Go". Then, choose "page 1" which shows last posts (and of course, the last page is the older). You can trust me, no more troubles...

For Opera Users, you can select the link (left button) then after a right click on the selected address, choose "go to the web address" (as shown (in French, I know) in the pic above). You just have to replace the ** with the right stuff and then click on the "GO" button.... An other way is to copy and paste the address in your navigator address bar (in a new window), then replace the ** and click "go" or "enter" on your keyboard (works with all web navigators).

And, to finish, a special word for w-e, always trying to help poor travelers lost in space (FF's visitors)...

Regards to all...

That is a much better way - when I last tried it all I got was gateway errors - but that was a long time ago - see svinto's note in the 502 gateway thread - it was probably about then. I just tried it again on the vip em pee ell thread and it worked great - I've deprecated my method to the reserves bench.

I think I'll continue to use my method - it suits me because it is universal and because I am so keyboard centric; e.g I rarely right click, I use the arrow keys and the context menu key - for me it is much faster and far less error prone.
