Most of the posters here use Image Grabber 2 for thumbnails.

Useful and recommended software thread:

When you say screencap do you mean you want to capture a pic from the movie at a certain time ? Or you want to do a preview of the video with a dozen of pictures which give an idea of what the clip is about ?

Anyway, for both cases, I recommend Media Player Classic. To capture a pic, just type CTRL + i when needed, the picture will be saved in the same directory as the clip. If you want to create a preview, click on "File" then "Save thumbnails" and configure the size of the preview you want, the number of rows and columns and save it.

I made most of my previews with Media Player Classic, but i changed to KM Player (Ctrl-Alt-S). It is much faster and has better image quality (and saves the tumbnail automatically with the video-filename, in MPC you have to rename the pic manually) And you can remove the time-code in every picture.

Hi Loui375

Which version of KM are you using. I just installed 2.9.4.1435 off CNet. Crtl/alt/s gives an error about not being able to perform Superfast functions because I don't have the external codecs . I cant find anything in its menu's or help about it being able to do screen captures or thumbs.

The version installed does not work in a dual screen set up using Actual Windows, I had to disable AW & reboot to even get it work. The link in the Useful Software Page took me to me to a Chinese site with no obvious option for switching to another language, so I got a copy from Cnet.

I installed KLM because MPC sometimes creates upside down screenies - as in attachment.

I found a thing called Video Thumbnail maker, that works on my rig, and it does NOT produce upside screenies - but I'm not enamoured with it.

I wish VLC would do screenies.

thanks who-ever

The version of MPC I have (1.3.1333.0), created the name for the jpeg exactly as you see here, so I am not sure what you mean by having to "rename the pic manually". The name of the vid file is
Code:
FoxyCombat - Marlies aka Vendula vs Jessica - Spontaneous Gift.wmv

MPC 1.3.1333.0 adds the "_thumbs_[date & time stamp]" to the end of the video file name and saves it where you tell it to save it. I think that's what MPC has always done - but I don't use it often, so I could be wrong on that.

Thanks who-ever, for pointing out the strange link of KMPlayer. I changed the link to "/forums" there's a download section.
I use the same version as you and have the same problems with some videos (maybe 20 % of the vids): some filter / codecs seems to be missing.
Since i'm running an old Win2k system i thought it might be due to that, so i didn't mention that error above. In those cases i still use MPC.
Too bad, but in about 80% of the vids it's really super fast.
I will have a look at this KMPlayer forum, maybe i find some help.

There are two different kinds of MediaPlayerClassic: the old, not updated version 6.491 and a newer, modified one that you are using, MediaPlayerClassic-HomeEdition v1.3.1249. There the naming problem is solved (and you can adjust brightness/contrast as a "new" feature).

Your preview is kind of funny, never saw that upside down error before, have no clue why this happens.

Btw, i'm using the "SendTo" folder to start videos easily with different players/thumbnail-makers.
Just copy a link to the "SendTo"-folder (in your root directory/documents and settings/your username") and you can right-click on a video file and send it to the desired application.
Once KMPlayer (i only use it for making previews) is started, i resize the program window so i can "drag and move" the videofiles in a directory to this window and use "Ctrl-Alt-S". Saves a lot of time when making a bunch of previews (at least for those who are working in superfast mode
Wink )

Thanks Louie - I think I'll let KMP go through to keeper for now, I couldn't live without two heads

For watching movies I like VLC, I use GOM if VLC fails. So I only need something for the odd screen cap I make, I'll stick to the new MPC and resort to that VTM gadget I found when MPC turns the world on its head.

I put MPC's upside behaviour down to the fact that I'm in the southern hemisphere - its the only thing that makes the vaguest sense

I also use SendTo a lot, eg for text files I normally use Notepad++, but occasionally there'll be a reason to use vanilla Notepad and I do that via SendTo.

This is the best kept secret around, should work on Win2K -->> http://antibody-software.com/web/software/software/wizmouse-makes-your-mouse-wheel-work-on-the-window-under-the-mouse/ You'll wonder how you managed to live so long without it.

I had the same problems with upside down screenshots/captures with Image Grabber 2 when I installed it on new computer.

Couldn't solve it by myself, but saw a notice somewhere on a board, who said, it's a problem with wrong/missing codecs.

Installed everything from the scratch with the newest codecs and the problem was solved.

Haven't used KMP often, but read in the forum, that you have to uncheck the Superspeed and Highspeed mode:
activate advanced options: Video(advanced) -> Superspeed and Highspeed mode

Don't know, if it works, but I haven't found any clip in my collection where I can't do screens (example attached).

Thanks MDR - I think you just blew away my hemispherical theory Wink

I think you mean Image Grabber II, Image Grabber 2 is NOT the same thing.

Image Grabber 2 is a screen snapper, actually its latest incarnation was 3.1 and it came from gordo software - who've gone out of business; but plenty of download sites are still selling it!

I tried Image Grabber II, but like KMP it can't seem to handle having 2 monitors - it wedges/jams/locks up and I have to kill with Process Explorer. You'd think people writing video manipulation s/w would test with multiple monitor setups. Since the advent of affordable FAQ flat screens most (all) photogs and vid makers have dual (or triple or quad) headed rigs.

I found a command line gadget called mtn, that sounds more like my cup of tea, but first try and it had font f..... problems - maybe there's a -f switch. Otherwise I'll use MPC when it works and VTM when it doesn't.

I wish VLC could make screenies - it can just about make cups of tea Very Happy

I tried a lot of preview-makers and I choose the "Video Thumbnails Maker", check out my thread for samples! It does all the job automatically for lots of files! Just nice!
