Anybody know a good free program to burn AVI, MPG, WMV files to VCD format? I want to fit more videos on a disk than DVD allows and play it on a DvD player.

actually windows DVD maker will do that for you...I recently converted avi format to dvd that was fine when it was done, including a clip for the menu without intervention. It was not the fastest thing I ever did because the re-encoding is a huge process, but it wasn't much slower than the "paid" one I use

Are you sure? VCD quality approx. quarter as DVD (352 x 288 vs. 720 x 576)
Use a multimedia player (for example WD, Sony, Alcor, etc.) which can play a lots of formats up to fullHD quality. Price starts from 100 USD...

I put the first season of Sons of Anarchy on two disks that consisted of six and seven episodes that were approximately forty minutes each@six to seven hundred MB avi files. No,it wasn't hi def by any means, but not bad as far as quality goes and completely acceptable by old school analog standards on a television. The disks play well on most players including the cheapo $29 dollar ones...

I already have Convert X to DvD. The problem is that DvD takes a lot of disk space. Hoping VCD will take less space.

My friend has no internet. He keeps asking me for porn. I'm tired of burning movies to DvD disks. I just want to put a bunch of them on 1 disk that can be played in a DvD player. Quality doesn't matter to me.

Hi Deity

As I understand it you want to burn more to your DVD's - so you don't have to use so many?

Well as you have ConvertXtoDVD then you can easily put a lot of vidoes on one dvd. Just add all the videofiles you want (ConvertXtoDVD can up to 99 on one DVD) and then just burn it - just ignore it when it tells you the quality will be bad.
Of course the more video-files you put on one dvd then worse the quality will get - but as quality is not an issue for you then it doesn't matter.

The easiest thing for you would be to get your friend to buy a dvd-player that plays divx (almost all players that plays divx will also play xvid) - then you can just burn the videofiles to the dvd as a data-dvd = a lot more videos on one dvd.

Now I don't know where you live but in the states Best Buy has a Toshiba SDK990 right now for 34.99$ it's refurbished but that's an ok price.
If you're elsewhere in the world the price shouldn't be that much higher.

I don't know what he has. He's got a PS3 though, but I doubt it would play it.

Most files, seem to just about double the disc size when converted. 3.5g of files take up over 7g of disc space. It will prompt me to insert another disc if I exceed 4.7gb

Well then it's much easier - just put the videoes on a usb flash drive in a folder named "VIDEO" and when you connect the usb-drive the videos will show up in the video menu on the PS3.

Note: i've only got it to work with xvid(avi) and mkv files, if your videos are in the wmv format - you must convert it to xvid (or mkv if it's HD).
I've read that some have gotten their (slim) PS3 to play wmv-files but I can't get it to work on mine.

Even if you don't have a usb flash drive lying around, the 8-10$ for a 2-4 GB flash drive is quickly saved in you not having to burn dvd's - and plus it's much faster.

Yeah, much easier, do the same with my PS3.
Just connect it (external hd) via USB to the PS3. Remember that PS3 only reads FAT32 format.

The following types of files can be played under (Video).

  • Memory Stick Video Format
  • MPEG-4 SP (AAC LC)
  • H.264/MPEG-4 AVC High Profile AAC LC
  • MPEG-2 TS H.264/MPEG-4 AVC, AAC LC
  • MP4 file format
  • H.264/MPEG-4 AVC High Profile (AAC LC)
  • MPEG-1 (MPEG Audio Layer 2)
  • MPEG-2 PS (MPEG2 Audio Layer 2, AAC LC, AC3(Dolby Digital), LPCM)
  • MPEG-2 TS MPEG2 Audio Layer 2, AC3 Dolby Digital, AAC LC
  • MPEG-2 TS H.264/MPEG-4 AVC, AAC LC
  • AVI
  • Motion JPEG (Linear PCM)
  • Motion JPEG (μ-Law)
  • AVCHD .m2ts / .mts
  • DivX
  • WMV
  • VC-1 WMA Standard V2

Hints
Depending on the data type, some files may not be playable or some control panel options may not function during playback.
To play WMV format files, you must go to (Settings) > (System Settings) and set [Enable WMA Playback].
When using a USB adaptor to play video files, you may need to use a USB adaptor (not included) that supports copyright-protection features (to play copyright-protected files).
When using a USB adaptor to play AVCHD-format video files saved on Memory Stick™ media, use a device that supports Hi-Speed USB (USB 2.0).
WMV format copyright-protected files cannot be played.
Some video files distributed over the Internet have playback restrictions. For details, contact the content provider.

You have to unpack all the zip files (just select them all and the right click and select unpack here - I assume you have either Winrar or 7-zip).
That will give you some Rar-files, then you select those and again select unpack here.
That will give you the installer and the crack. Then just follow the instructions in the nfo-file (open that with notepad or use Damn NFO viewer - just google that to find it).

And yes it's quite convoluted - but that is the scene-rules for apps (0-day). And infact if you find an app that's just plain exe-files or just Rar (or Zip) it is not an official scene release and should be avoided. Most apps on warez-boards, torrents etc. are the usual P2P-shit: non-working and full of viruses.
