There are some points why you should protect your files.

1. Referrer:
https://www.forumophilia.com/topic83383.html#893108

RS should not know, where the people come from or where some links were posted.

2. Bots
Bots raid boards for links.
Whether if they're programmed from paysites to report their links to RS or if they're from other sites, which wants to steal content, doesn't make any difference. Both possibilities are bad.

3.Reporter
It will make it more difficult for reporters, if they have to click one or two times to get the RS links.
No copy and paste possible.

In addition to the points referenced above, I also like the fact that huge urls like :
dead link
get tidied up a bit with a shorter link:

I prefer tinyurl over other link protectors that open an extra page that needs to be closed, it's just like clicking the actual link, only takes a few seconds extra...

And what i like the most at tinyurl: it's an established site that seems not to be gone next month (at least i hope so).

I guess i could live without any protectors, and i defintely won't try any new one. It's just to much effort to test if the links are available or if there are several daytimes when the site is not reachable ... then they are useless.

The same reason why i'm careful with new imagehosters: If they are gone you have a lot of work to re-up your pics to another hoster.
