I have been using a pirated Camtasia Studio 5 which works well except for the hit or miss thing with audio. I have a bunch of downloaded full length porn movies which I cut into pieces to get just the good stuff. Half of these movies will not have audio when I import them to Camtasia Studio 5 for editing. Not having audio is like losing half the quality of a good scene. Do you know of a free video editing software that work well with both audio and video? Windows movie maker just don't work for me. Please post your ideas.

Thanks in advance

For your purposes VirtualDub and VirtualDubMod would be the best solution, and they are freeware.
Code:
www.virtualdub.org

Code:
virtualdubmod.sourceforge.net

Although it might be a codec problem that your camtasia-stuff don't edit the audio, i would suggest you to try them instead.
Just a hint: for DVD-rips i use only VirtualDubMod cause (on my pc) the A/V synchronisation fails with VirtualDub.

Thanks for your replies but it seems to me this last project I did, posted here Arrow https://www.forumophilia.com/topic97840-90,.html was protected or something. I edited it without audio and whatever codec I use for rendering, the end product would look shitty, or it freezes (depends on the codec I used). In the end, I rendered it without compression and the file size grew up to 18 gigs. I re rendered the 18 gig file to come up with a pretty decent vid at 200 MB. Camtasia has a dub tool but when I clik on the file I was rendering the vid from, it still would not recognize the audio. It must have been a different and more advanced codec/s used in the original file.

I tried to just trim the video using machete software but I get an error message whenever I open the file. Machete works on other files except this one.

Not sure about what post you are talking.
Just a hint: you can link to a single post by moving the mouse over the small white symbol left of the postdate here:

copy this link and post it, it will lead to this post.

What video format was your source video, i can't believe of anything "protected".
Every kind of *avi or *mpg-1 i convert with VirtualDub, *wmv, *mov or *mp4 covert with "super"
Code:
http://www.erightsoft.com/SUPER.html

To find out the video details i look at MPC/properties or use GSpot, which also tells you the videocodecs

Thanks, I learn something new everyday

It's in avi format. I know here's got to be a way to work around it, I just don't want to spend that much time fiddling around just to get a scene out of it. I just thought I can find a quick fix and not spend more than a few hours.

I've found Avidemux good for editing, and it's freeware, although it has not been as reliable as VirtualDub. Occasionally VirtualDub hangs, probably due to a lack of memory on my system. I usually re-encode avi's and other formats with the divx or xvid codec, creating a smaller file that's a snip to edit (pun intended).
