i tried to watch a couple of video samples on my supposedly upgraded winamp, windows media player as well as infranview, but every time i try to oopen the files, i keep getting "no codec" error messages.

i SPECIFICALLY downloaded a plugin for winamp that was supposed to run divx files, but it's totally useless.

how on earth do i watch DIVX files on my 98se PC?

i tried finding the codec with a search engine, but i only saw a bunch of new sites i've never heard of, or run into the 2000-XP brick wall. i have 98se. none of the legit freeware sites i'm familiar with eg. nonags & majorgeeks showed up in my search.

after at least 2 seperate downloads that were supposed to let me view the clips, i'm still no better off than before i wasted my time.

where can i get a solution that actually works?

look at

http://www.divx.com/divx/win98me.php and
http://www.divxmovies.com/codec/

version 2.6 runs on W98

Why are you still using 98 though???

i'm still running w98se, because that's what i have. i aso have NOTHING BUT CONTEMPT for **** upgrades. i despise that your PC is always artificially breaking because EVERY industry related to PCs conspires to keep dipping in your pockets.

i'm not getting a new PC until this one catches on fire.

sorry, but my 20 year old TV STILL works fine and has only needed ONE upgrade, a $20 RF modulator. that's the way PCs should work. i REFUSE to pay the "keep up with the jonses" game with PCs. i won't do it even if i'm the only person on the planet boycotting planned obsolescence.

thanks for the replies. i'll try to see if i can get something to work.

long live backwards compatability!

what really drives me nuts is that EVERYONE seems to think that "you must keep upgrading" is the way things should be. it isn't.

buy it once and replace it ONLY when it breaks... i mean REALLY breaks.

i'm downloading the VLC player right now, but what i don't get is why the "complete verson with installer" is only 9.5mb, but the incomplete zipped version is 15mb. that makes no sense.

Hmmm...I can see your point in some ways...but its progress....and without it I would either not exist or be still living in a cave with my family in Scotland eating haggis. Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing

That aside...have you gotten the W98 version of vlc to work??

yes thank you. it works fine. all that work to look at a couple of previews with giant text in front of the action. LOL

at least now if i ever find my teenfuns clips again, i'll be able to watch them. i don't really do video too much. the quality is too low and they take too long to load.

i'd rather spend more on a full fidelity DVD, but most sites that offer video only do downloadable. it's a shame really. instead of paying $40 to joun a site, i'd rather spend $80 on 4 DVDs of just the models i'm interested in.

i don't see the whole PC thing as "progress". i see it as a massive conspiracy to FORCE you to keep buying. over a year or two ago, i read an article stating that most people really only need about 10-20% of their PC's processing power.

sorry, but if all you do is surf the net, you don't need a (whatever top speed is today) PC.

there's a reason that software vendors don't keep the older versions of their programs around... they are playing the same game as the vendors who make sure that your old PC can no longer get the CD-R that it USED to be able to support anymore.

the upgrades aren't doing consumers any favors... they're doing shareholders a big favor though.

i'm going to run this PC into the ground. don't get me started on reality TV weaning people off the free TV teat for $50 worth of digital cable infomercials. if you pay $50 a month for mostly crappy programming, you shouldn't have to see a single commercial.

the thing that really drives me nuts is that most people seem content to go along with the program and sometimes even attack me for refusing to like a scene out of night of the living dead

"join us. you'll be much happier once we eat your brain. LOL
