Well, I knew the time would come... I've ran out of space on my old Maxtor EHD. Anyone have any recommendations for a good one, looking for about a TB of storage space?

I usually just go to Newegg when I need something computer-related. Then I look at the category of whatever it is I want, go to Advanced Search, pick whatever I'm looking for from the drop downs and then I sort by "best rating". Usually I wind up with something way better than I was expecting.

After you get a few likely looking recommendations, then shop around at other sites to be sure you're getting the best price on it. Usually the customer reviews there are spot on.

My choice was the "LaCIE 1TB" (ruggedXL version) six months ago ...

Extremely reliable. I'm very very happy with it.

Here's a few links to some ratings sites for you.

http://www.pcworld.com/article/123728/top_10_external_hard_drives.html

I just used this last site to buy a new winter coat. I know it's crazy to buy a winter coat in the middle of summer, but that's when you find the best deals on closeouts, overstocks, and discontinued heavy coats, not when it's starting to get cold out.

If you want to carry your porn-hdd with you, a real external solution with a case and a AC-adapter might be the best.
If you just want another hdd for storing porn that you can disconnect easily and hide in the cellar so no one finds it, maybe think of buying a normal hdd and a USB/S-ATA adapter. This adapter normally also supplies the power for the hdd.
I have on of these cause i compared the prices and this kind of solution was much cheaper and the data-rate (which is of course lower, USB2 ~ 480Mbit) wasn't that important for me. You can even use more that one hdd with an adapter (well, not the same time).

This is one of those areas where you might get people arguing. One will swear by a brand that others say is garbage. Me? I avoid Maxtors and WD like the plague. My last 4 externals have been Iomegas - 3 1 terabytes and a 1.5 TB. The oldest is just over a year old (or thereabouts) and, so far, haven't seen any problems.

One word of caution. If you're going to keep the external running all the time, I'd like for an enclosure with a fan in it. I use the Iomegas for backups only, so the aluminum housing keeps the drive cool enough, long enough to not let the it heat up too much. But, from what I've seen, there aren't too many externals sold that way. If you can't find one, putting an internal drive in a highly rated external enclosure (as in check Newegg) is a good option.

The two best places I've seen for buying drives are newegg.com and mwave.com. Amazon's prices are generally high and they don't seem to have the selection I'm looking for

If you are an Apple addict like me, you would consider their Time Capsule (1 and 2 TB) which can be used ofr automatic backup and also for storage. Besides it serves as the Airport for your wireless network.

I think it is PC compatible.

I love my Apple!!! Very Happy
