How to add subtitles file

Sometimes, videos come with a subtitles file.
How do I add this to the main video?
I have tried adding the file using the VLC app but it hasn't worked.

Any help appreciated.

Well you can do that in VLC.

Just click "Subtitle" -> "Add Subtitle File..." then select the file. You need like a .srt file or something with the subtitles for it to work. Good luck
